Back-up

User Guide for Back-up

(The following information is in progress. Please contact IT support team for more information on TSM).

The large number of data and the complexity of computer systems on Computer Science Department, were forced the Department to find new ways and methods to backup the data.

Department use the software Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) of ΙΒΜ, to do automatically the process of data back-up. TSM is a latest technology software using the client-server model and which can:

  • backup and restore
  • archive and retrieve
  • instant archive and rapid recovery
  • migrate and recall
  • operate as a disaster recovery manager

For all the data whenever they are.

Backup can be done either automatically from scheduler or from the user (without technical support team  interference) on central systems consisting of disks (figure 1). Backup can be done from all operatιng systems that Department of Computer Science supports. More information on TSM can be found on: www.tivoli.com. It has a software user guide and installation instructions. Technical support team organizes the backup processing, such as the process will be done for 24 hours. The following table displays the times and teams of central servers and of all other machines, which cooperate on backup processing.

On this team there are also some other central servers, which users cannot access, but they are important for the department good operation.

Client installation on machines (personal computers and laptops) with operating system Microsoft Windows 2000/XP

A computer can use TSM with backup and retrieve client installation. IT support team can do the installation on all machines that TSM is not already installed and active. User should have in mind to save his data (for backup) only on specific directory of computer hard disk  such as: \docs\. Any other folders that are not under  \docs\, directory (user create them) or directories that are already on disk such as: C:\Program Files, C:\ Windows, will not included on backup process.

What I have to know for backup process on my personal computer with operating system  Microsoft Windows 2000/XP

  1. Backup process is “Incremental Backup”.
  2. The process starts at 10:00 pm. All machines that are active, will be included on backup process. If the machine is not active, TSM, “will try”, to communicate with client-machine, for the next 4 hours. If the machine will be active during those 4 hours, the backup process will start.
  3. Using some predetermined policies on TSM server, backup process is:
    • For each file or directory (backup), TSM server, keeps three versions.(the active version) and 2 previous inactive versions.
    • Each  inactive version,  exists on TSM server for 30 days.
    • If a user delete a file from his computer, TSM server, keeps one file version for 90 days.

What I have to know for backup process on my laptop with operating system  Microsoft Windows 2000/XP

  1. Backup processing is “Incremental Backup”.
  2. Laptops are divided on two teams. For the first team, the process starts at 8:00am until 14:00 pm, and for the second team at 14:00-20:00 pm. All machines that are active, will be included on backup process. If the machine is not active, TSM, “will try”, to communicate with client-machine, for the next 6 hours. If the machine will be active during those 6 hours, the backup process will start.
